In defense of the remakes, I think people are receptive of them because the old film styles just don't hold up. Nowadays they have more technical shots, CGI, and special effects that can help tell the story the way it might have been intended, or moreso visualized by a fan 20 years ago, but just hasn't held up.
Take Conan the Barbarian for instance. The previews made it look interesting. The hype was that it stayed close to the Robert E. Howard sources, it had hot chicks, CGI, and loads of money being thrown at it. The reality was that it relied on some campy rendition of what was a solid movie, replacing rubber snakes for CGI, plot and story for sfx, and a muscle-bound actor with someone who speaks intelligible English. What they should have done was dust off John Milius, given him a bunch of money and said, "John, work your magic." Instead, we got a shitty video game of a movie that Uwe Bol wouldn't even play.

I don't have a problem with CGI. I only have a problem with poorly done CGI. Some movies do it well. Others do not.

I stuffed Conan back in the Netflix envelope and got out my copy of the John Milius original and watched it to wash the bad taste out of my eyes.
I mean come on, the soundtrack alone made the movie better. The bare bones feel of it. Shit, Conan has like ten lines in the whole movie. It was a shame that Jason Momoa made the Cimmerian "chatty." Some of the best quotable movie lines in history. Right up there with Full Metal Jacket and The Big Lebowski in my opinion.
Gotta admit though, the remake had hotter chicks.

Nothing really wrong with CGI, unless it's used to enhance the story, and not story to expand CGI (Star wars prequels)

I completely agree. The Lord of the Rings movies were enhanced by CGI, but Sharktopus and Pyrranahs: Fish of Fire! was not. The original Conan didn't need CGI. Nor did Amercian Werewolf in London. The new Red Dawn remake has unnecessary CGI, but it's like polishing a turd with that script from what I've seen.

I hear it's not even being shot in Detroit.

The new car doesn't look that bad. Actually, more police-like. At least they've just used the updated model of the same car instead of changing it completely. Can't see that being the crux of the movie being good. But at least they kept something of the original. If this is the new ED-209, I'm a bit torn on it. It does look a lot meaner, but I can't quite get the feel for it

They probably can't shoot it in Detroit because of all the farmland that is cropping up. Or they are afraid of getting murdered.

Robocock. I hate that new suit. It looks like a typically lazy 'modern' design, but also more like a shit Batman-themed gimpsuit. How generic can you get? Ooooh, it's all sleek, shiny and black like a badass ninja cyborg special-forces superman warrior of the future!
Yes, and it looks shit! Give me the original, clunky-yet-awesome iconic Robocop design anyday. Complete with club feet and hilarious lack of mobility. Bollocks to this bland cack.
And why the fuck is the top of his head made out of plastic? Surely you'd want the most protection there, seeing as that's where what's left of his fucking brain is?
"Stupid film..."

Am the only one that sees the militarization of police in the old Robocop film, and in a way, remaking it is another glorification of it?
That's how I look at it. Remember the cops in Robocop were always armed to the teeth with heavy weaponry and they wore bullet proof vests. I wonder if this remake will tie into that police state stuff we are witnessing heavily these days in America.
