Halloween is nigh upon us time to up that dose of horror movies. Alucarda Alien The Thing Let the Right One In Dawn of the Dead Day of the Dead Pet Sematary Event Horizon Return of the Living Dead Halloween Stephen King's It scared the crap out of me as a kid might still if I watch it but I don't think I've ever watched all of it. It's not because I was ever too scared but the second half with them as adults is so shit. Haven't seen these but want to watch them: Ginger Snaps, Re-animator, Night of the Demons and The Fly. I know this was asked at the facebook group page but I thought this should be here as well.

I can't really count Alien or The Thing as horror since that is more their sub-genre then their actual genre. They're more scifi/horror. As for horror/horror mine are:
Clive Barker's Hellraiser Hellbound: Hellraiser II Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth John Carpenter's Christine Bram Stoker's Dracula ( more of a horror/romance, but i think it counts) Stanley Kubrick's The Shining Child's Play Child's Play 2
I think that's it.

Dawn of the Dead would be my favourite even though my Dad introduced me to the movie when I was extreamly young and spent most of my youth absolutely affraid of Zombies. Other than anything from Romero I'm really not big on horror films.

I have to say I've never gotten into zombie movies. Same with slasher films. Both seem rather repetitive and boring to me.

Probably The Thing. Can't think of any that come to mind as being better. As a kid, it was pretty much Jason and Freddy that seemed cool, with Lost Boys and Fright Night there too. But I guess I grew out of them. Plus the two mentioned vampire movies are pretty different in their style to the generic vamp movies around.

I agree with bobgrill regarding zombie flicks, they're all essentially the same, I've seen my fair share but the last few I've seen in recent years I've kind of lost interest during the film and walked off or picked up a book or something cos it's always a virus breaks out and people turn mental / zombie and a group of stereotypical morons who you hate with passion try to survive. Mine are The Thing, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Pet Semetary, Event Horizon (which is a horror film, it just happens to be set in space, it's not a sci-fi film really), It (dated now but gave me nightmares as a kid and got me into Stephen King!), The Shining and I guess Alien as that is essentially a horror film at heart. Horror films are my favourite of genre to watch but I think in recent years I've not watched too much so have a much more rounded take on films I like as I've really got back into action films again in the past year.

Zombie films are, generally, more of a social study idea. At the end of the day, unless there is something unique about the zombies (like in Night of the Comet, which I haven't seen all the way through), then things can get very samey. As a monster/villain, zombies are pretty lame. No thinking, slow, easily outwitted. They're always more geared towards survival in a certain situation, and who is going to react in what way. Generic characters are usually in there, as the angry guy, the lame screaming woman, and the clumsy idiot. I'd say any zombie film that is based on being on the road is what people want to look for, but I've seen some totally dire amateur made stuff that has used that idea in the last couple of years, so not even that works. I'd say check out Colin, but don't expect anything big, because it was shot for something like twenty quid. Fair play, not a bad movie for that kind of budget

Return of the Living Dead is kinda entertaining, mostly because it's got a zombie who is actually somewhat smart, and goes around saying "Braiiins! More brains!"

The first Return of the Living Dead is classic and I also didn't mind the 3rd but damn the 2nd, 4th, and 5th are beyond bad although I can kinda cut a little slack to the 2nd because it did try and put a new spin on the genre but overall its nothing but bad 80's cheese.

I like Hellraiser IV as well, it's just not as good as the previous three films and I can't really say I enjoy it as much.

Agreed. Still, it is miles more interesting than all that direct-to-dvd nonsense, yes?
